Breath sensor for analysis and bio-feedback

Biofeedback in breathing can be used for exercises such as yoga or singing, where breathing technique is vital.

Ideas for breath-sensor:

  • Using a single or an array of inductors and magnetometers around the torso should give an indication of breathing.
    • The disadvantages is that it requires bodyworn sensors and cannot detect breathing only using the diaphragm.
  • Reflective Photoplethysmography (PPG) is used for pulse oximetry for detecting heart rate and blood oxygen saturation. The heart-rate is detected as the AC component of the relected signal while the DC component would contain the oxygen saturation.

Supposedly, breathing should also be visible if a good signal is obtained. The Training Technology Lab has PPG sensors available for measuring this and is therefore well suited for making a student project about this.
